The most common fear or question in the mind of government exam aspirants is the age barrier. Especially in those who start preparing late, take a career break, or shift from the private sector. In reality, age is not the real barrier in government exams. Many exams in India offer flexible age limits, multiple attempts, and category-wise relaxations, allowing candidates even after 25, 30, or 35 years to apply for various posts.
Understanding the age criteria, number of attempts, and overall eligibility conditions is crucial before choosing any government exam. If you are the one who wants to start, switch (from a private job to a government job) and restart (after a gap) your studies for a government job, then this page will help you in deciding the best path according to your eligibility. Scroll down this page to know more about eligibility criteria, no of attempts, career options, etc.
Every year, numerous government exams are conducted by the state and central government of India to recruit the best candidates for the various government departments and offices. Students who want to prepare for any competitive exam should first have a clear picture of the eligibility criteria to begin the preparations. These criteria ensure a fair selection process and help aspirants determine whether they qualify to apply for a particular post.
Government Exam eligibility criteria typically contain nationality, age limit, educational qualification and physical standard, etc. In this section, we are providing you with the detailed eligibility criteria for your reference:-
To appear in the government exams in India, candidates must be Indian citizens. In some cases, candidates can apply if they have a Certificate of Eligibility. This includes candidates who are citizens of Nepal or Bhutan, or persons of Indian origin who have migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, or East African countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zaire, Malawi, Ethiopia, and Vietnam, with the intention of permanently settling in India.
However, the appointment will be given only after the Government of India issues the required eligibility certificate to the candidate (referred to as “him/her”).
Age limit varies from post to post in government examinations. Also, some candidates who come under the relaxation category will get some relaxation in age according to their categories.
Note:- To check the exact age limit, candidates must check the official notification of the examination. The minimum and maximum age limits can vary from exam to exam.
In India, there is a rule of relaxation in the upper age limit for some categories, scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, other backward classes, economically weaker sections, physically disabled candidates, etc. Have a look at the table below to know the category-wise relaxation age for government exams:-

Certain government exams demands physical test, which typically contains the Physical Measurement Test (PMT) and Physical Standard Test (PST). The basic aspects to examine the Physical Eligibility are as follows:-
Exams attempt limit usually depends on the exam age limit and the relaxation age. Some exams have no age limit as candidates are only allowed to appear in those exams till fixed age limit. The age limit usually decides the maximum number of attempts. In exams like UPSC CSE, there is a fixed no of attempts for each category. Candidates should check the no of attempts of the exams before appearing in it and give their 100% in the exam to get the desired results.
Government Jobs offer a wide range of career options, whether you want to pursue your career in administration, agriculture, defence, banking & finance, teaching, nursing or any other field.
