In collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), DRDO successfully carried out the first-ever launch of the medium-range Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher system on 24 September 2025.
- In collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), DRDO successfully launched the medium-range Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher system under a full operational scenario on 24 September, 2025.
- After several successful flight tests, the road-mobile Agni-P has already been inducted into service. This next-generation missile is designed to travel up to 2000 kilometers and is equipped with several advanced features.
- This first-of-its-kind launch was carried out from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher, capable of moving across the rail network without any preconditions.
- It provides mobility across the country and has the capability to launch with low visibility and shorter reaction time. It is self-reliant and equipped with all independent launch capability features, including state-of-the-art communication systems and security mechanisms.
- The missile’s trajectory was tracked by various ground stations, and it was a perfect launch meeting all mission objectives. This successful test will enable future induction of rail-based systems into service.
Agni-Prime (Agni-P):
- A next-generation, nuclear-capable, medium-range ballistic missile.
- Part of India’s Agni missile series, designed to strengthen strategic deterrence under the Strategic Forces Command (SFC).
- Developer: Designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with SFC.
- To provide flexible, durable, and quick response capability in India’s nuclear doctrine.
- Diversifying launch platforms beyond road-based systems to ensure resilience against first strikes.
Other ranges of Agni missiles:
- Agni I: Range of 700-800 km.
- Agni II: Range over 2000 km.
- Agni III: Range over 2,500 km.
- Agni IV: Range over 3,500 km and can be fired from a road-mobile launcher.
- Agni V: The longest in the Agni series, an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with a range of over 5,000 km.
Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP):
- The idea of its establishment was given by renowned scientist Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Its objective was to achieve self-reliance in missile technology. It was approved by the Government of India in 1983 and completed in March 2012.
- The five missiles developed under this programme (P-A-T-N-A) are:
- Prithvi: Short-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile.
- Agni: Medium-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile, i.e., Agni (1,2,3,4,5).
- Trishul: Short-range surface-to-air missile.
- Nag: Third-generation anti-tank missile.
- Akash: Medium-range surface-to-air missile.
