64th International Sugar Organisation Council Meeting in New Delhi Summit and Conference 5 min read

The 64th International Sugar Organisation Council meeting commenced on 25th June 2024 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Delegates from more than 30 countries and representatives of many international organisations are expected to participate in the meeting to be held from 25-27 June 2024 , to discuss issues related to the sugar industry and biofuels sectors. 

India is the Chairman of the International Sugar Organisation

India was elected as the chairman of the International Sugar Council for 2024 at the 63rd International Sugar Organisation Council meeting held in London.the United Kingdom last year.

As a chairman, India is hosting the 64th International Sugar Organisation Council meeting.

The  64th International Sugar Organisation Council in New Delhi will be hosted by Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, Chair, International Sugar Council. 

Global Sugar Industry and Position of India 

According to the International Sugar Organisation,110 countries in the world produce sugar either from sugarcane or from sugar beet.  According to the International Organisation Organisation, around 80 per cent of the world's sugar production comes from sugarcane. The sugarcane season around the world is October/September.

The largest producer of sugar in the world is Brazil followed by India, European Union , China and the United States of America.

India is the largest consumer and second largest producer of sugar in the world, with a share of about 15 per cent in global sugar consumption and about 20 per cent in sugar production. 

India is also the 3rd largest country producer of ethanol in the world after the USA and Brazil, Ethanol is derived from the molasses of the sugarcane and is increasingly being used as a biofuel to be blended with petrol. 

Uttar Pradesh is the leading sugarcane-producing state in India, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka.

FRP for Sugarcane for 2024-25 Season 

For sugarcane the government of India announces Fair and Remunerative Prices (FRP).  This is the minimum rate at which the sugar mills buy sugarcane from the farmers.

The minimum FRP of sugarcane for sugarcane season 2024-25 is Rs  315.10 per quintal  with the sugar recovery rate being of 9.5% or less.

The FRP is Rs 340 per quintal with the sugar recovery rate being 10.25%. The farmer will get an additional price of Rs  Rs 3.32, with an additional recovery by 0.1% sugar. However the same amount will be deducted if the recovery is less by 0.1%. 

About the International Sugar Organisation

The International Sugar Organisation was founded in 1968 as an inter governmental body to provide a forum for the major sugar-producing, consuming and trading countries to discuss related to the sugar industry.

At present it has 87 member countries which represents 87% of world sugar production, 64% of world sugar consumption, 34% of world imports and 92% of world exports.

The Council sessions of the International Sugar Organisation are held twice a year, mainly in May and  November, to discuss the policy issues related to the sugar industry worldwide.
