Keiko Fujimori Officially Elected President of Peru

Nearly a month after the June 7 runoff vote, right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori was officially declared the winner of Peru's presidential election, certified by the country's electoral court. She beat left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez by fewer than 50,000 votes, 50.135% against 49.865%. PM Narendra Modi congratulated Fujimori on her victory, reaffirming India's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Peru.

This wasn't Fujimori's first shot at the presidency. 

1. She ran in 2011, 2016, and 2021, losing all three by similarly thin margins during a decade of intense political instability. 
2. At age 51, she becomes Peru's ninth president in just ten years. Her swearing-in is scheduled for Jul 28, 2026.
3. Keiko Fujimori's win, coming alongside Abelardo de la Espriella's election in Colombia, signals a clear rightward tilt across Latin America. 
4. Leaders like El Salvador's Nayib Bukele and Ecuador's Daniel Noboa have been part of the same wave, many aligning themselves with US President Donald Trump's approach to the region.
5. Brazil's Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva now stands as the region's most prominent left-wing leader, facing Jair Bolsonaro's son in elections later this year.
6. Sánchez has refused to accept the result, alleging irregularities and filing a legal challenge to nullify the vote
