United States Celebrates 250th Independence Day on July 4, 2026

The United States marked a once-in-a-generation milestone today — the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, celebrated across the country on July 4, 2026. Known as the Semiquincentennial or "America 250," the occasion is being observed with nationwide events spanning Washington, DC; Philadelphia; and cities and small towns right across the country. President Donald Trump is at the center of the day's proceedings, having already made news with a series of presidential pardons announced on the occasion.
July 4, 1776, is the date the country's founding fathers formally signed the Declaration of Independence, cutting ties with British rule and establishing the 13 American colonies as a free nation. That document, adopted in Philadelphia, became the founding text of American democracy and the reason July 4 has been a federal holiday ever since. This year's 250th marks the biggest such anniversary in living memory.
Major events are lined up in Washington DC and Philadelphia, the city where the Declaration was adopted, featuring military flyovers, historical re-enactments, concerts, and parades. Fireworks will light up skies in major cities, attracting thousands of spectators, while smaller communities are running their own local events simultaneously.
On the occasion, President Trump announced pardons for 11 individuals, among them a former business partner of Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff and nine people convicted in cases tied to bypassing vehicle emissions control systems.
