UPI Completes 10 Years: World's Largest Real-Time Payment System
Updated: 25 Aug 2026
5 Min Read

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the Reserve Bank of India's oversight, has completed a decade since its launch on August 25, 2016. Over these ten years, UPI has grown into the backbone of India's digital payments ecosystem, and the IMF has recognised it as the world's largest real-time payment system by transaction volume, a milestone that reflects India's growing leadership in building scalable digital public infrastructure.
The year 2026 has been particularly strong for UPI. Monthly transaction volumes crossed 2,300 crore for the first time in May 2026, reaching 2,320 crore transactions. This momentum carried through the year, with July 2026 recording 2,366 crore transactions and ₹29.87 lakh crore in transaction value, both marking the highest monthly figures in UPI's history so far.
UPI is currently live in 11 countries, extending its reach well beyond India Countries include Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, the UAE, France, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and Qatar. Cambodia joined the network in June 2026, through a partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited and ACLEDA Bank. UPI went live in Greece in June 2026 for cross-border remittances, enabled via Eurobank. On July 30, 2026, UPI was linked with the Maldives' Favara payment system. This step further strengthens bilateral digital financial connectivity between India and partner nations.
Institutional participation on UPI has grown steadily since launch. The number of banks live on the platform rose from just 44 in FY 2016-17 to 703 by FY 2025-26 and further climbed to 741 banks by July 2026.
This expansion spans public sector banks, private banks, small finance banks, payment banks, and cooperative banks, allowing UPI to reach deep into both urban and rural India.
Each participating bank functions as either a Remitter PSP, handling outgoing payments, or a Beneficiary PSP, receiving funds, with NPCI overseeing performance across the network.
Breaking down UPI transactions reveals an interesting pattern. Person-to-merchant (P2M) payments make up 63% of total transaction volume, showing how frequently UPI is used for everyday retail purchases. However, person-to-person (P2P) transactions dominate in value, accounting for 71%, suggesting they're commonly used for larger transfers between individuals. Within P2M transactions, 86% were below ₹500, reflecting UPI's role in small, routine purchases, while P2P transactions showed a more balanced split, with 59% below ₹500 and 41% above that threshold.
UPI works by connecting multiple bank accounts to a single mobile app, letting people send money, pay merchants, and manage banking tasks around the clock. Security is built in through two-factor authentication and encryption, which is part of why the system gained trust so quickly across the country.
2016: The Starting Point
UPI began as a pilot with 21 banks in April, then opened up to the public in August once banks started listing their UPI apps on the Play Store. By December, the government-backed BHIM app arrived, giving people a direct way to move money bank-to-bank from their phones.
2017: Making Merchant Payments Easier
This year brought Dynamic QR codes, which let shop owners generate codes that already carried the payment amount and their details, so customers didn't have to type anything in manually.
2018: UPI 2.0 Rolls Out
A major update added several new capabilities at once — users could now preview bills before paying, authorise payments more securely through signed QR codes, set up recurring mandates for regular payments, and even link their overdraft accounts to UPI.
2019: A Billion Transactions a Month
SEBI opened up UPI as a payment option for retail investors applying to IPOs, and by October, UPI had crossed one billion transactions in a single month, an early sign of how fast it was catching on nationwide.
2020-2022: Expanding to New Users and Use Cases
This stretch saw some of UPI's biggest functional additions. AutoPay made subscriptions, EMIs, and bill payments easier to automate.
2023: Credit Enters the Picture
Credit Line on UPI let users link pre-approved bank credit as a funding source for payments, not just their own money. By this point, UPI was handling around 70% of all digital payments in the country.
2024: Raising Limits, Adding Flexibility
UPI Circle let one person authorise someone else, like a family member, to transact from their account within set limits. The RBI also raised transaction limits significantly for tax payments and select categories like capital markets and healthcare, while UPI 123Pay and UPI Lite both got higher usage caps.
2025: Biometric Payments Arrive
On-device fingerprint and face unlock became a way to authenticate UPI payments, and Aadhaar-based face authentication made it simpler for first-time users and senior citizens to set up their UPI PIN without needing a card.
