The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a proposal to rename Noida International Airport in Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath made the announcement. This is only the state-level approval. The formal renaming needs further steps at the Union government level, so people should wait for official notifications.
The proposal to change the name was approved by the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet. Naming a major airport after a sitting Prime Minister is quite unusual in India, which is why the decision is drawing attention. The naming is separate from the airportโs operational plans, so flight operations and facilities are not affected by it.
The airport is meant to serve the wider Delhi-NCR region and western Uttar Pradesh. It is developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG. It is a public-private partnership involving the governments of Uttar Pradesh and India. It will give Noida and Greater Noida an additional air gateway for the National Capital Region, and it is expected to boost tourism and economic activity.
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviationโs March 2026 update, the airport is being built in four phases, along with a multimodal cargo hub.
These facilities are meant to make it a major aviation hub for Delhi-NCR and western Uttar Pradesh.
Many Indian airports already carry the names of leaders, historical figures and freedom fighters.
