Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presented the SIDM Champion Awards 2026 at the 8th Annual Session of the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) in New Delhi on October 9, 2026. The awards honour organisations that have contributed to Indiaโs indigenous defence manufacturing.
The theme of the session was โSovereign Capabilities, Contested Frontiers: Accelerating Indiaโs Strategic Autonomy in an Era of Disruption.โ The minister said that national security now depends on a countryโs ability to design, develop, make and control the technologies its armed forces need.
Modern conflicts depend on drones, missiles, air defence systems, software and communication technologies. Citing Operation Sindoor, he stressed that factories must be able to scale up production quickly when needed.
The government has brought in the Defence Acquisition Procedure, Defence Procurement Manual, Positive Indigenisation Lists, SRIJAN portal and Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) to expand private defence capabilities. The minister assured that support will continue, along with standards of regulation, safety, quality, and accountability.
India has changed from a major importer of defence equipment to a reliable exporter. Defence exports rose by over 60% compared with the previous year to a record โน38,424 crore in FY 2025-26. The government aims to reach โน50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029.
