Goa Shipyard Limited Hands Over ICGS Ajit to Indian Coast Guard

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a major Defence PSU, handed over ICGS Ajit, a new Fast Patrol Vessel, to the Indian Coast Guard in Goa on August 25, 2026. The handover marks another step forward for India's indigenous shipbuilding programme and adds a modern platform to the Coast Guard's fleet.

About ICGS Ajit New Fast Patrol Vessel

1. Yard number 1277, built with over 65% indigenous content
2. Measures 51.43 metres in length and 8 metres in width
3. Displaces 330 tonnes at a draught of 2.5 metres
4. Fitted with twin marine diesel engines and controllable pitch propellers (CPP) — a first for this vessel class
5. Capable of speeds above 27 knots with an endurance of 1,500 nautical miles
6. Comes with an integrated machinery control system for better operational efficiency
7. Will be crewed by 6 officers and 35 sailors
8. Designed for fisheries protection, EEZ surveillance, coastal patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search and rescue duties

Senior Officials of the Indian Coast Guard and GSL Present at the Handover of ICGS Ajit

The ceremony, which followed the First Reading Ceremony, saw participation from top leadership on both sides. GSL was represented by Chairman and Managing Director Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, along with Directors RAdm Nelson D'Souza, Jahangeer Alam Ansari, and Nagesh Das Pai. From the Coast Guard side, DIG V. K. Parmar and Comdt (JG) Manish Talan, who will command the vessel, were present, alongside several other senior officials from both organisations.

GSL's Role in Advancing Indigenous Shipbuilding

This handover reflects GSL's ongoing push to build high-performance defence platforms domestically, supporting the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. By focusing on indigenous content and new technology like CPP propulsion, GSL is helping position India as a serious player in global shipbuilding under the Make in India initiative, while also strengthening the country's maritime security and blue economy ambitions.
