The Indian cricket team for the forthcoming 13th ICC Men’s ODI(One Day International) World Cup 2023 was announced by the BCCI (Board of  Control for  Cricket In India ) chief selector Ajit Agrakar on 5 September 2023.  The 15  member Indian squad includes KL Rahul who has not played any competitive cricket since May this year. He is the first choice wicket keeper for the team with Ishan Kishan as the second choice keeper.

The last date for announcement of the world squad for the 10  teams participating in the World Cup was 5th of September 2023. However the teams can still make changes in their squad until September 28 without needing approval from the ICC. 

Hosts India begin their campaign on October 8 against five-time World Cup winners Australia in Chennai.

Indian Team for World Cup 

Rohit Sharma (Captain), Hardik Pandya (Vice-Captain),Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj.

13th ICC Men’s ODI World CUP 

  • The 13th ICC men’s world cup is being held in India from October 5 to 19 November 2023.
  •  A total of 48 matches will be played across the country at 10 venues.
  • The matches will be played at Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata.
  • The semi finals will be played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai and at Eden Garden Stadium, Kolkata .
  • The final will be played at the world’s biggest cricket stadium Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad,Gujarat .

Participating teams 

  • A total of 10 teams will participate at the World Cup event. The top 8 ranked ODI teams India, Pakistan, Australia , England, New Zealand , Bangladesh and Afghanistan qualified automatically. Sri Lanka and Netherlands make up the number by being the top two teams of the  ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023.
  • To fill the last two spots an ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023  tournament was held in Zimbabwe in the month of June-July 2023.
  • The qualifier tournament  was won by Sri Lanka by defeating Netherland in the finals. 
  • Both Sri Lanka and Netherlands have qualified for the ICC World Cup. For the first time two time champion West Indian team will not play in the ODI World cup . They failed to qualify at the Qualifier tournament.

Format of the World cup

All 10 teams will compete against each other once in the round-robin stage. The top four teams at the end of the round-robin stage will qualify for the semi-finals.

ICC Men’s ODI cricket World Cup 

  • The first ICC Men’s ODI cricket World Cup was held in England in 1975 which was won by the West Indies team.
  • The first three 1975, 1979 and 1983 each team were allotted 60 overs . However from the 4th edition onwards the ODI world cup is now 50 overs per team match.
  • Australia is the most successful team in the history of the ODI world cup. It has won the trophy 5 times .
  •  India and West Indies have won it twice . 
  • England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka have won it once .
  • India won the world cup for the first time under Kapil Dev in 1983 and second time in 2011 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

International Cricket Council (ICC)

It is an international governing body of men’s and women’s international cricket.

It was founded as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909 and was later converted into the International Cricket Conference in 1965.

In 1987 it was renamed as the International Cricket Council.

Members of ICC 

At present ICC has 108 members. The members of ICC are divided into two categories. . 

Full members: There are 12 full member countries which are qualified to play test matches. They are India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Afghanistan.

Ireland and Afghanistan were granted full membership in 2017.

Associate members: There are 94 Associate members. They are not authorised to play test cricket but they do participate in other tournaments of ICC or at the regional level recognised by ICC.
