651 Indian Army Personnel Awarded UN Medal for Peacekeeping Mission in DR Congo
Updated: 06 Jul 2026
2 Min Read

Six hundred and fifty-one Indian Army personnel received the United Nations Medal on July 3, 2026, at a ceremonial medal parade held at Permanent Operating Base Sake in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The event recognised the Indian contingent's service, professionalism, and operational excellence under the UN peacekeeping mission in the region. Senior MONUSCO officials, Force Headquarters representatives, military commanders, and other distinguished guests were present at the July 3 ceremony.
India's presence in the DRC is a part of MONUSCO, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The 651 personnel honored on July 3, 2026, at Sake have been serving in this mission, which focuses on protecting civilians and supporting stabilisation efforts in one of Africa's most conflict-affected regions.
The UN Medal is awarded to military and civilian personnel who have served a minimum period under a UN peacekeeping mandate. It's not a routine honor; it's tied to actual field service in difficult conditions.
India is one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations globally, with a history stretching back decades. Thousands of Indian troops are deployed across multiple active missions at any given time. This latest recognition in the DRC adds to a long record of Indian military personnel being honored for their work under the UN flag in Africa, the Middle East, and beyond.
The medal parade at Sake is a reflection of that continued commitment to international peace and security.
