Hindalco Commissions India's First Superfine PPT ATH Plant in Karnataka

Hindalco Industries has set up a new manufacturing facility in Belagavi, Karnataka, on 27 August 2026, marking a first for the country. The plant produces Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH), a specialty material widely used to make electrical cables and infrastructure components fire-safe.

India's First Superfine PPT ATH Plant: Capacity and Expansion

1. The new Belagavi facility currently has an annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes, enough to cover nearly all of India's domestic demand for fire-safe cables from the wire and cable industry. 
2. Hindalco has planned the plant so it can be scaled up to 60,000 tonnes in phases as demand within the country continues to rise. Managing Director Satish Pai said the move strengthens the company's position in the specialty alumina space and pushes it further up the value chain. 
3. Saurabh Khedekar, CEO of Hindalco's Alumina Business, added that being India's first manufacturer of this material helps cut import dependence and supports the growing wire and cable sector with an indigenous, world-class alternative.

2. Hindalco says this makes it the only specialty alumina plant anywhere in the world running completely on renewable power.

About Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate

PPT ATH is a flame-retardant material that doesn't contain any halogen, which makes it valuable for safety-critical applications. It's used in fire-resistant cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composite materials, and specialty paints. When added to cables, it slows down flame spread and reduces smoke generation, and unlike many other flame retardants, it does this without releasing harmful halogen acid gases into the air.
