Indian Railways has launched a major expansion plan to quadruple capacity along its busiest 11,000-km stretch of tracks. These routes carry a huge share of the national network's load, and the move aims to ease congestion while preparing for rising demand in both passenger and freight movement.
The core idea behind this plan is what's being called a "four-laning" programme, essentially building four parallel railway lines along these high-density corridors. This would give Railways far more flexibility to separate passenger trains from freight trains, cutting down on the kind of scheduling conflicts that cause delays. Some sections of this 11,000-km network already have four tracks in place, and expansion work is already underway on several other stretches.
According to the minister, only a small fraction of the identified routes are still awaiting detailed project report (DPR) clearance, meaning construction on most of the network should begin soon. This expansion also ties into the Railways' broader strategy of shifting more freight traffic onto trains and away from roads, a shift that depends heavily on having enough track capacity to handle the extra load without disrupting passenger services.
