Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated a world-first advanced air pollution analysis facility for Delhi-NCR on October 24, 2026. The facility helps scientists identify exact pollution sources, analyze toxic aerosol compositions, and refine real-time air-quality forecasts. It provides scientific evidence to support targeted, enforcement-driven action against regional air pollution.
The facility operates as the Integrated Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosol Toxicity Analysis Laboratory (AATAL) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
The government established AATAL under Mission Mausam, an umbrella initiative announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to upgrade India's weather forecasting capabilities.
AATAL moves beyond traditional air monitoring, which only tracks raw particulate matter mass ( and
).
AATAL operates alongside IITM's AIRWISE system (Air Quality Warning and Integrated Decision Support System for Emissions).
AIRWISE generates high-resolution air quality forecasts at an unprecedented 400-meter spatial resolution up to 72 hours in advance. This pinpoint accuracy allows municipal bodies to target specific industrial clusters or traffic corridors instead of applying blanket city-wide restrictions.
Whole-of-Government Approach to Clean Air
Dr Jitendra Singh emphasized that single departments cannot resolve air pollution in isolation. Managing air quality requires active inter-ministerial coordination.
Scientific data from AATAL guides CAQM enforcement teams, enabling them to apply targeted measures under GRAP based on empirical chemical data.
