Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won the first gold medal for India at the 'World Athletics Championships 2023' in Budapest, Hungary.
Neeraj achieved this feat with a throw of 88.17 metres in the men's javelin event at the National Athletics Center in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
- In this championship, Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan won the silver medal by throwing the javelin up to 87.82 metres. Jakub Vadlejchgot of the Czech Republic won the bronze medal with 86.67m.
- In the javelin throw event, two other Indian athletes produced outstanding performances as Kishore Jena (84.77m) finished fifth and DP Manu (84.14m) finished sixth.
- Prior to the Budapest 'World Athletics Championships 2023', Neeraj Chopra was the first Indian track and field athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics (Tokyo 2020), Diamond League title (2022) and Junior World Championships (2016).
India's first silver medal in global track and field competition:
- Neeraj Chopra, who holds the national record of 89.94m in men's javelin throw, had won a silver medal at the World Championships in Oregon last year.
- It was India's first silver medal at a global track and field event and the country's second after Anju Bobby George won a bronze in the women's long jump at Paris 2003.
Parul Chowdhary 11th place:
- In the women's 3000m steeplechase event, India's Parul Chowdhary finished 11th but produced her personal best performance. With this, she has secured her place in the Paris Olympics 2024.
