World Athletics Championships 2023, India's Neeraj Clinch 1st Silver

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won the first gold medal for India at the 'World Athletics Championships 2023' in Budapest, Hungary.

Neeraj achieved this feat with a throw of 88.17 metres in the men's javelin event at the National Athletics Center in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

• In this championship, Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan won the silver medal by throwing the javelin up to 87.82 metres. Jakub Vadlejchgot of the Czech Republic won the bronze medal with 86.67m.
• In the javelin throw event, two other Indian athletes produced outstanding performances as Kishore Jena (84.77m) finished fifth and DP Manu (84.14m) finished sixth.
• Prior to the Budapest 'World Athletics Championships 2023', Neeraj Chopra was the first Indian track and field athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics (Tokyo 2020), Diamond League title (2022) and Junior World Championships (2016).

India's first silver medal in global track and field competition:

• Neeraj Chopra, who holds the national record of 89.94m in men's javelin throw, had won a silver medal at the World Championships in Oregon last year.
• It was India's first silver medal at a global track and field event and the country's second after Anju Bobby George won a bronze in the women's long jump at Paris 2003.

Parul Chowdhary 11th place:

• In the women's 3000m steeplechase event, India's Parul Chowdhary finished 11th but produced her personal best performance. With this, she has secured her place in the Paris Olympics 2024.
