Indian-born American musician Chandrika Tandon won her first Grammy award in the ‘ Best New Age Album, Ambient or Chant Album category’ for her album Triveni at the 67th Grammy Awards 2025. This was the first Grammy Award for the 71-year-old Chandrika Tandon who was once nominated for a Grammy award in 2011 for her album Soul Call.  

The 67th annual Grammy Awards function was held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the United States of America, on 2 February 2025.

 

The Grammy Awards is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards in the music industry and is given annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in the United States of America. The first Grammy Award was given in 1959.

Award for Chandrika Tandon 

The Chennai-born Chandrika Tandon is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management -Ahmedabad and started her professional career with Citibank.

She is a trained Carnatic and Hindustani vocalist.

She got the award for her album ‘Triveni’, which is a collaboration of three artists representing diverse cultures.  The album contains Vedic chants and meditative tones with world music.

The Triveni music album features the music of three-time Grammy-winning South African flautist Wouter Kellerman and Japanese-origin cellist Eru Matsumoto. 

They beat Padam Shri Ricky Kej and Anoushak Shnakar, daughter of Pandit Ravi Shankar, for the award. 

Ricky Kej has won three Grammy Awards while Anoushka Shankar is yet to win a Grammy Award.

Indian Award Winner At Grammy 

  • Late Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar has won the award five times, maximum for an Indian or Indian-origin musician. He also won the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.
  • The late Tabla maestro Zakir Hussian has won the award four times.
  • Ricky Kej has won it three times.
  • AR Rahman, flutist Rakesh Chaurasia, and record producer PA Deepak have won it twice each.
  • Instrumentalist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, lyricist Gulzar, singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan, percussionist V Selvaganesh, composer Ganesh Rajagopalan, audio engineer H Sridhar, and singer-songwriter Tanvi Shah and Shakti have won the award once each.
