One of the best-known Tabla maestros of his generation, Ustad Zakir Hussain, died in San Francisco, the United States of America, on December 14, 2024. He was 73 years of age.

Ustad Zakir Hussain was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in San Francisco and died due to complications arising out of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Zakir Hussain Music Career 

Zakir Hussian was the son of the renowned Tabla maestro Ustad Allah Rakha Khan and was born in Mumbai on 9 March 1951. 

From the age of seven years, Zakir Hussain started performing on stage as a Tabla player.

Zakir Hussain was one of the foremost Indian musicians who took Indian classical music to the world stage. He performed with music legends like sitarist Ravi Shankar, Sarod player Ali Akbar Khan, and Santoor player Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma.

He also collaborated with Western artists like George Harrison, Edger Meyer, Ricky Hart, and John McLaughlin.

His ‘Project Shakti’ with English Guitarist John McLaughlin and violinist  L.Shankar  was a path-breaking project in which Indian classical music was fused with Jazz. This created a new audience for Indian classical music on the world stage.

He emerged as the cultural icon of India along with Pandit Ravi Shankar in the world.

His Film Career 

Ustad Zakir Hussian also composed music for films.

He was the music composer of films like Manto and Mr and Mrs Iyer. He also made short appearances in films like Heat and Dust, Saaz and Perfect Murder.

He also appeared in the 1988 commercial ad for the Taj Mahal Tea, making him a household name. 

Award and Honour to Ustad Zakir Hussian 

Ustad Zakir Hussian was honoured with numerous awards during his illustrious music career.

He was honoured with India’s fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri, in 1988, the third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan, in 2002, and the second highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, in 2023.

He won four Grammy awards, which are considered to be the highest music award in the world.

He is the first Indian to receive three Grammy awards at the 66th Grammy Awards in 2024.

At the 66th Grammy Awards, he won awards in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album (As We Speak);  Best Global Music (This Moment) and Best Global Music Performance (Pashto).

He received the Kalidas Samman of the Madhya Pradesh government in 2006.
