The Indian Navy’s indigenous guided-missile stealth frigate, INS Sahyadri, arrived at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan on November 4, 2026. The Eastern Fleet warship will represent India in the multilateral naval exercise Malabar 2026.
The high-profile naval drill brings together four major Indo-Pacific democracies: India, Japan, the United States, and Australia. INS Sahyadri's deployment highlights India's expanding maritime diplomacy and demonstrates the collective resolve of partner nations to promote regional stability.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) hosted a formal welcome ceremony upon INS Sahyadri's docking at Yokosuka. The reception reflected the deep strategic trust and enduring friendship between India and Japan.
The ceremony provided an early opportunity for Indian and Japanese naval officers to interact before starting intense tactical planning.
Exercise Malabar began in 1992 as a bilateral naval drill between India and the United States. Over the years, it expanded to include Japan and Australia, forming a premier Quad maritime exercise.
Exercise Malabar 2026 will execute its operational objectives through two distinct, structured phases:
1. Harbour Phase
During the initial harbour phase at Yokosuka, participating crews will engage in tactical briefings, subject matter expert exchanges, and cross-deck ship visits. Naval commanders will finalize complex operational schedules, review communication codes, and conduct pre-sail briefings.
2. Sea Phase
During the sea phase, warships, submarines, and aircraft from all four partner nations will deploy to open waters. INS Sahyadri will perform complex multi-threat exercises alongside American, Japanese, and Australian naval vessels. Tactical drills will cover advanced surface warfare, air defense interceptions, and anti-submarine tracking.
INS Sahyadri's participation directly reflects India's regional maritime philosophy known as MAHASAGAR.
MAHASAGAR stands for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. This strategic vision emphasizes collaborative security, collective economic development, and proactive maritime partnerships across the Indian Ocean and the broader Indo-Pacific.
By engaging regularly with like-minded partner navies, the Indian Navy acts as a preferred security partner and first responder in shared ocean spaces.
