Bharti Airtel Executive Vice Chairman Gopal Vittal has secured another consecutive term as Chair of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) Board of Directors. He will continue to lead the global mobile industry association through the 2027–2028 leadership cycle, holding the office until December 2028.
This re-election highlights India's rising influence in shaping global telecommunications policy. Vittal's leadership comes at a crucial moment as mobile operators worldwide navigate rapid digital transformations driven by artificial intelligence (AI), 5G expansion, 6G research, and satellite connectivity.
Vittal has served on the GSMA Board for nearly a decade and first assumed the role of Chair in 2025. During his tenure, he has helped steer the global body through complex technological changes and shifting regulatory landscapes.
The GSMA (GSM Association) is a premier global industry body representing mobile operators and broader technology organizations. The association unifies telecom companies, device manufacturers, software firms, and internet leaders to foster technological progress across international borders.
Vittal has identified cybersecurity and consumer protection as top priorities for his extended term. As mobile networks integrate deeper into critical national infrastructure, protecting systems against cyber threats becomes vital.
Telecom companies must safeguard users against aggressive digital scams, voice phishing, and financial fraud. To address these threats, the GSMA launched the Scam Use Case Library. This collaborative initiative uses artificial intelligence and real-time threat intelligence sharing to help operators identify, track, and block scam techniques before they harm consumers.
Ensuring financial sustainability for telecom operators remains another key goal. Operators require healthy cash flows to fund high-cost capital investments in modernizing networks, acquiring spectrum, and rolling out reliable digital infrastructure.
The GSMA Board has also appointed two prominent international telecom leaders as co-Deputy Chairs to work alongside Vittal:
This experienced leadership trio brings deep operational insights from mature European markets and rapidly growing emerging economies across Asia and Africa.
The 2027–2028 mandate coincides with a transformative era for mobile technology. While telecom providers continue to expand 5G coverage, engineering teams are laying the foundational architecture for 6G networks.
Artificial intelligence is becoming central to telecom infrastructure. Operators deploy AI algorithms to optimize network traffic, manage power consumption, improve customer care, and detect fraudulent calls automatically. Additionally, direct-to-cell satellite connectivity offers new opportunities to deliver coverage to remote and underserved locations.
During a recent GSMA Board delegation visit to India, Vittal led discussions with senior leaders and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their dialogue focused on expanding digital trust, hardening cyber defenses, building 5G and 6G ecosystems, and integrating satellite constellations into national networks.
Vittal holds extensive operational responsibilities as Executive Vice Chairman at Bharti Airtel, guiding group-wide strategies across digital technology, network deployment, procurement, business operations, and talent management.
Vittal uses his global platform at the GSMA to integrate insights from India's dynamic telecom market into international discussions on connectivity, digital inclusion, and network security.
