GM Gukesh Dommaraju, from Chennai, became the youngest undisputed World Champion in December 2024. He was just 18 when he beat China’s Ding Liren in Singapore. He reached a rating of 2750 before turning 18 and is still among India’s top-ranked players. GM Javokhir Sindarov from Tashkent, earned his place by scoring an unbeaten 10/14 at the 2026 Candidates Tournament, the best showing in its modern history. He became a grandmaster at 12 and was the youngest Chess World Cup winner in 2025.
The match has 14 classical games, and 30 seconds are added to each player’s clock from move 41. Tie-breaks will be played on 12 December only if the score is level after 14 games.
The championship goes back to 1886, when Wilhelm Steinitz became the first official champion. Magnus Carlsen then held the title for about ten years before stepping away in 2023.
