Bahamas has officially joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA) as its 116th member country. This historic move expands international cooperation on solar energy deployment and sustainable development.
Peter Nicholas Symonette Jr., High Commissioner of the Bahamas, formally handed over the Instrument of Accession to the ISA Framework Agreement. He presented the document to P.S. Gangadhar, Joint Secretary of Economic Diplomacy and Head of Depository. The ceremony took place in New Delhi during the Ninth Session of the ISA Assembly.
The Bahamas completed its membership process by submitting the Instrument of Accession. This formal legal document confirms a nation's commitment to the founding charter of the alliance.
The ISA Assembly serves as the primary decision-making body of the organization. Representatives from all member nations gather at this annual event to establish policies, approve operational budgets, and review global clean energy initiatives. The Ninth Session provided an ideal venue for the Bahamas to complete its accession process.
India and France jointly launched the International Solar Alliance during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris in 2015. The organization helps nations adopt affordable and reliable solar power solutions.
The alliance prioritizes assistance for vulnerable regions, particularly Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Solar panels convert natural sunlight directly into clean electricity. This renewable energy source gives island nations a reliable tool to diversify their national energy grids.
As a Small Island Developing State, the Bahamas faces unique environmental and energy challenges. Island energy grids often depend heavily on imported diesel fuel, which drives up electricity costs for local citizens.
Joining the alliance grants the Bahamas access to global technical knowledge, shared research, and collaborative funding frameworks tailored for island infrastructure. While the accession announcement does not detail specific immediate solar projects, the partnership establishes a strong framework for future clean energy development.
The Bahamas is an archipelagic nation located in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of Florida and northeast of Cuba.
The Bahamas comprises over 700 islands and thousands of small islets and cays. It features a tropical marine climate, famous white and pink sand beaches, and expansive coral reefs. Mount Alvernia on Cat Island stands as its highest point at 63 meters.
Tourism forms the primary backbone of the Bahamian economy, supported by financial services and commercial fishing. Major population centers include Nassau and Freeport. The nation maintains active memberships in the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, and CARICOM.
