The Grid Controller of India Limited (GRID-India) has been awarded the status of Miniratna Category-I Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) on 20 March 2024. This recognition given by the Ministry of Power, Government of India underlines the role of Grid-India in the power scenario of the country.

Functions of Grid Controller of India Limited (GRID-India):

  • At present Grid-India has several responsibilities for the smooth operation of the Indian power system, the major ones being:
    • To oversee the flawless and uninterrupted operation of the Indian Electricity System
    • Ensuring efficient transfer of electrical power within and across regions
    • Facilitating transnational power exchange with a focus on reliability, economy and sustainability.
  • GRID-India facilitates affordable and efficient wholesale electricity markets while managing settlement systems.
  • Grid-India bears the immense responsibility of managing the All India Synchronous Grid, one of the largest and most complex power systems in the world. Under this, five Regional Load Despatch Centres (RLDC) and National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC) have been included.

  • The importance of Grid-India has been continuously increasing in the last few years. Because its responsibilities are increasing day by day which Grid-India has completed very well. This can be seen in the following points:
    • Integration of Electrical Systems
    • Increasing Energy Demands
    • Diffusion of Renewable Energy (RE) Sources
    • Evolving rules along with economic development and technological progress
    • Grid-India has responded quickly to market needs.

About Grid Controller of India Limited (GRID-INDIA):

  • Established: 2009
  • GRID-India was formerly known as ‘Power System Operation Corporation Limited’ (POSOCO). Grid-India is a wholly owned company of the Government of India under the Ministry of Power.
  • The new name of POSOCO is Grid-India from 9 November 2022.
  • It is responsible for monitoring and ensuring round-the-clock integrated operation of the Indian power system.
  • GRID-India comprises five Regional Load Dispatch Centers (RLDCs) and one National Load Dispatch Center (NLDC).
  • The Southern Regional Load Despatch Center (SRLDC) oversees RLDC operations in the southern region of India.
