5-time Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand Receives SJFI Gold Medal
Updated: 29 Jun 2026
2 Min Read

Viswanathan Anand, the five-time World Chess Champion, has been awarded the Sports Journalists' Federation of India (SJFI) Medal, one of the most respected peer recognitions in Indian sport, on 24th June 2026. The ceremony took place at the iconic Madras Cricket Club, organised jointly with the Tamil Nadu Sports Journalists' Association. Former India cricket captain and chief selector K. Srikkanth presented the medal to the 56-year-old grandmaster, who currently serves as deputy president of FIDE, the global chess governing body.
SJFI is the highest honor bestowed by the Sports Journalists' Federation of India. It was established in 1976. Recipients receive a gold medal, a citation, and a memento.
In nearly five decades since the SJFI's founding, six athletes have met that standard. The following are the names of sportspeople.
