Neeraj Chopra Finishes Second at the Lausanne Diamond League 2026
Updated: 22 Aug 2026

India's Neeraj Chopra finished second in the javelin throw event at the Lausanne Diamond League 2026, held in Switzerland, narrowly missing out on gold by just nine centimetres. This marked his third competitive outing of the 2026 athletics season.
He opened his competition with a throw of 83.54m, placing him second at the time. He then improved on his second attempt with an 88.05m throw, briefly taking the lead in the competition. However, this remained his best mark of the day and also his strongest performance since returning to competition this season, though it ultimately wasn't enough to secure first place. His third attempt measured 83.72m, followed by a foul on his fourth throw, after which he chose to skip his fifth attempt and closed out the competition with a final throw of 82.15m.
Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga edged past Neeraj Chopra with a winning throw of 88.14m, continuing his recent dominance over the Indian javelin thrower. This was Tharanga's third Diamond League win of the season, following earlier victories in Doha and Rome, where his massive 92.62m throw remains the world-leading mark this year. Notably, Tharanga has now beaten Chopra in their last four meetings, including at the Commonwealth Games last month.

Held on August 20-21, 2026, the Lausanne Diamond League, also known as Athletissima, served as the 12th leg of the Wanda Diamond League season and an important qualifying stage ahead of the finals in Brussels. The event also featured other notable performances, including Mondo Duplantis setting a meeting record of 6.21m in the pole vault, and local favourite Audrey Werro winning the women's 800m in a meeting-record time of 1:55.33.
