India Ranks 8th Among World's Top Tourism Economies 2024-2025

India has moved up to 8th place among the world's biggest tourism economies, contributing $231.6 billion to its national economy, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. The WTTC goes further, projecting India will reach 4th place globally within the next ten years. Between 2014 and 2025, the country recorded 181.25 million international arrivals and 93.35 million foreign tourist arrivals. The government frames this not as a tourism achievement alone but as a pillar of the broader Viksit Bharat@2047 vision.

Some of the major highlights of the world’s top tourism economies 2024-2025 report are the following:

1. India climbed from 10th to 8th in the WTTC's global tourism economy rankings, contributing $231.6 billion to the national economy in 2025.
2. The WTTC projects India will reach 4th place globally within a decade, overtaking several long-established European tourism economies.
3. Between 2014 and 2025, India recorded 181.25 million international arrivals and 93.35 million foreign tourist arrivals.
4. In 2024 alone, India welcomed 20.6 million international arrivals, jumping to 20th position globally from 25th in 2016.
5. Over 4.5 lakh people were trained under the Capacity Building for Service Providers scheme between 2014 and 2025.
6. The Swadesh Darshan scheme, Phase 1, sanctioned 76 projects worth over ₹5,000 crore across 15 tourist circuits, 75 of which stand physically completed.
7. Swadesh Darshan 2.0, launched in 2022, shifted focus toward sustainable, experience-driven tourism with interventions like floating log huts at Tehri Lake and Mahabharata-themed attractions in Kurukshetra.
8. The PRASHAD scheme sanctioned 54 projects worth over ₹1,700 crore, upgrading pilgrimage infrastructure at sites including Somnath, Srisailam, and Govardhan.
9. Under the SASCI program, 40 projects across 23 states worth ₹3,295.76 crore have been sanctioned to develop iconic destinations to global standards.
10. Mamallapuram became the first UNESCO World Heritage site in South Asia to earn the Green Destinations Silver global certification.
11. The Challenge-Based Destination Development (CBDD) initiative sanctioned 38 eco and spiritual tourism projects worth ₹697.94 crore, including Panidihing Bird Sanctuary in Assam and Nizam Sagar in Telangana.
12. The Union Budget 2026–27 proposed a National Institute of Hospitality and the upskilling of 10,000 tourist guides at iconic destinations.
13. More than 100 destinations have been upgraded over the last decade through various infrastructure schemes.
14. A revitalised Incredible India campaign, backed by stronger digital promotion, international roadshows, and travel mart participation, is actively expanding India's presence in global source markets.
