Mahesh Dixit Appointed as New Intelligence Bureau Chief in India

The Union government appointed Mahesh Dixit as the new director of the Intelligence Bureau on 25 June 2026 in New Delhi. He is a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre and will serve a two-year tenure, succeeding Tapan Kumar Deka, whose term ends on 30 June 2026.

1. The Intelligence Bureau is India's internal security and domestic intelligence agency working under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was set up during the colonial period, with roots going back to 1887.
2. The IB handles counter-terrorism; collects and shares intelligence, protects critical infrastructure, including aviation; and keeps a check on secessionist activities. It also runs background checks for security clearances of diplomats, judges, and other key individuals. 
3. The IB director sits on the Strategic Policy Group and the Joint Intelligence Committee under the National Security Council and reports directly to the prime minister.
