India Conducts First Jet Aircraft Landing Using GAGAN Satellite Navigation System
Updated: 29 Jun 2026
3 Min Read

India marked a historic milestone in civil aviation on 27 June 2026 when the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) carried out the country's first-ever satellite-based landing approach on a jet aircraft. An IndiGo A320 successfully landed at Udaipur Airport using the GAGAN navigation system, a first for jet operations. Previously, this technology had only been tested on smaller turboprop aircraft.
GAGAN stands for GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation. It is India's own satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) for civil aviation, developed jointly by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The system improves the accuracy of standard GPS signals using geostationary satellites and a network of ground reference stations spread across India. India is the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to have an operational SBAS system, placing it among a select group of nations with this capability.
Some of the key features of Gagan Satellite are GPS accuracy, precision landing, interoperability, and global standing.
GAGAN satellite relies on a complex network of ground and space segments.
Beyond aviation, GAGAN's precise positioning capability is useful across several sectors. As of May 2026, AAI had published 23 LPV approach procedures, targeting over 40 by the end of 2026.
