Indian Fencing Team Wins Overall Commonwealth Championship 2026

India topped the medal tally at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2026, held in Lagos, Nigeria, from August 9 to 12. Across the four-day event, Indian fencers delivered a strong all-round performance in both the U-23 and Senior categories, finishing at the top of the overall standings.

India won its maiden overall title at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships 2026 in Lagos

This win marks India's first-ever overall title at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships, making the 2026 edition in Lagos a landmark moment for Indian fencing. Topping the medal tally and claiming the Wilkinson Sword Trophy for the first time since the championship began recognising overall winners in 1982 reflects the growing depth of talent across India's fencing programme, spanning both the U-23 and Senior categories, and across all three weapons, foil, épée, and sabre.

Team India's Medal Tally in Lagos

1. India finished the championship with a total of 35 medals, 13 Gold, 8 Silver, and 14 Bronze.
2. The campaign began on Day 1 with India winning 17 medals at U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship
3. Complete podium sweep in Men's Sabre led by gold medallist Nikhil Wagh 
4. Gold wins from Joys Ashita in Women's Foil, Prachi Lohan in Women's Épée, and Jeferlin in Women's Sabre. 
5. On Day 2, India shifted focus to Senior Individual events, adding 7 more medals, highlighted by a Gold-Silver finish in Senior Women's Épée through Tanishka Khatri and Khushi Dabhade.
6. Day 3 brought 5 more medals, with gold wins for Kanaglakshmi in Senior Women's Foil, Rajendran Shanthimol Sherjin in Senior Men's Épée, and Karan Singh in Senior Men's Sabre.

The team performance earned India the Wilkinson Sword Trophy

On the final day, India's fencers delivered a strong showing in the Senior Team competitions, winning 5 Gold medals out of the 6 team events contested — in Men's Sabre, Women's Sabre, Men's Épée, Women's Épée, and Women's Foil, with the Men's Foil team taking Silver. 

This dominant team performance helped India secure the prestigious Wilkinson Sword Trophy, awarded by the Commonwealth Fencing Federation since 1982 to the nation with the best overall results at the championship.
