India wins 17 medals at U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship

India put on a dominant show on the opening day of the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, Nigeria, walking away with 17 medals — four gold, four silver, and nine bronze. Running from August 9 to August 14, 2026, the event covers Sabre, Foil, and Epee categories, and Indian fencers made sure they reached the podium in every single one of the six individual events.

India's Performance in Men's U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship

The men's team had a particularly memorable start, with Nikhil Wagh leading a complete Indian sweep of the podium in the Sabre event. Lakshay Badser took silver, while Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba shared the bronze between them, meaning India took all three medal spots in this category.

The strong showing continued in Foil, where Tejas Patil won silver and Hemash Sanasam picked up bronze. In Epee, Lokesh Vemani added another silver to India's tally, with Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbkess both securing bronze medals.

India's Performance in Women's U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship

The women's squad matched their male teammates in dominance, topping the podium in two out of three categories. In Foil, Joys Ashita claimed gold, with Kanaglakshmi close behind in silver. Prachi Lohan won gold in Epee, supported by Nivedhya Nair and Anupriya, who both took bronze medals in the same event.

In Sabre, Jeferlin secured gold and Aakhari followed with silver, while Shreya Gupta rounded off the women's medal tally with a bronze.

Rajeev Mehta, secretary general of the Fencing Association of India, praised the team's strong start to the championship.
