Himachal Pradesh Launched First Battery-Storage Solar Project in Spiti Valley

Himachal Pradesh has started its first solar power project with a battery storage facility in the Spiti Valley. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated it in Rongtong, in the Kaza area of the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti, on October 14, 2026. This is a big step for clean energy in the remote Himalayan region.

Key Details About the Spiti Valley First Battery-Storage Solar Power Project

1. The plant has a capacity of 2 MW and is paired with a 1 MWh battery storage system. 
2. It was built at a cost of Rs 4.42 crore and stands at about 3,600 metres above sea level. 
3. It is expected to produce nearly 36 lakh units of electricity every year.
4. Construction began on May 30, 2023, and the plant was commissioned in December 2024. 
5. The Chief Minister also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth Rs 116.28 crore in the district. 
6. These included 66/22 kV sub-stations at Sumdo in Kinnaur and at Kaza, with a combined cost of Rs 47.95 crore.

What Is a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)?

A Battery Energy Storage System is a set of large batteries that store extra electricity when it is produced. The stored power can be used later when it is needed. Solar plants work only in daylight, so a BESS helps supply power in the evening or when the sun is weak. This makes the supply steadier and more dependable.

What Is the Rongtong Hydel Power Project?

Rongtong Hydel Power Project is a small hydropower plant in the same area. The CM said it will be made fully functional, and Rs 6 crore will be spent on this work. Together, solar and hydel power can improve the electricity supply in Spiti.

How Is Spiti Valley First Solar Project Important for Himachal Pradesh?

1. Better power supply: During his first visit as CM in 2023, local people complained about poor and unreliable electricity. This project is a step towards fixing that.
2. Clean energy in tough terrain: It shows that solar power can work even at very high altitudes in the Himalayas.
