Indian wrestler Vishvajit Ramchandra More has won India’s first-ever silver medal in the Greco-Roman category at the U23 World Wrestling Championships 2026 in Las Vegas. He competed in the men’s 55kg category and lost a close final.
More made history on 13th October, 2026, when he became the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to reach a final at the U23 Worlds. In the title bout, he faced Koba Karumidze of Georgia and lost 12-13 in the last seconds
This is not his first podium finish. He had already won two bronze medals at the U23 World level earlier, which makes him the only Indian Greco-Roman wrestler with two medals at this event. The silver adds a third medal to his name.
More won three tough bouts to reach the final:
His rival in the final, Karumidze, also had a close semifinal against Barsbek Asankozhoev of Kyrgyzstan.
India’s campaign also faced an off-the-mat problem. Nine Indian U23 wrestlers across Greco-Roman and women’s categories were denied visas for the event, as they were under 20 and did not have full-time jobs.
Greco-Roman is a style of wrestling in which wrestlers can only use their upper body. Attacks on the legs and holding the opponent below the waist are not allowed. Points are mostly scored through throws and holds. It is one of the oldest forms of wrestling and is part of the Olympic Games.
