Air France Complies With Israel’s Crew Nationality Ban

Air France has confirmed that it is fully complying with new enforcement directives from Israeli authorities that prevent flight crew members including both pilots and cabin crew of certain nationalities from operating flights into Israeli airspace.
The regulatory restrictions cover citizens and dual-nationals of 31 countries that do not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Israel. Affected nations include Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Tunisia, Oman, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.
The enforcement push has ignited widespread discussion across the international aviation industry regarding how national security mandates intersect with global airline operations and staff scheduling.
In an official statement addressing the directives, Air France confirmed that it must abide by all national entry and overflight regulations established by destination sovereign nations.
"Like all airlines, Air France is required to comply with the entry regulations established by the authorities of the countries it serves, both for its customers and employees," the airline stated.
Air France noted that it issued an internal memo to pilots and cabin staff alerting them to the updated compliance rules governing flights to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport. The internal directive warned that failure to comply could expose both individual crew members and the airline to official sanctions from Israeli regulators.
The regulatory restrictions enforced by Israel’s Ministry of Transport and Road Safety apply to crew members holding primary citizenship or dual citizenship in any of the 31 listed countries.
While entry restrictions existed in principle previously, enforcement was heightened following a security incident on a Dubai–Tel Aviv Flydubai flight on September 30, 2026. Following that incident, Israeli security authorities notified foreign commercial carriers that nationality-based crew exclusions would be strictly monitored and enforced at all checkpoints.
Adhering to nationality-based border controls creates complex logistical challenges for international airlines like Air France. Global carriers maintain diverse, multicultural flight crews, requiring flight operations departments to restructure roster assignments for Tel Aviv routes.
Other major international carriers, including Czech Republic-based Smartwings, have similarly confirmed their compliance with the updated Israeli directives.
Air France has not announced any changes to its flight schedules or service frequencies to Tel Aviv as a result of these staffing adjustments.
