The BCCI (Board for Control of Cricket in India ), at its meeting held on 18 March 2024, has decided to form a four-member committee comprising head coach Rahul Dravid, Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, National Cricket Academy director VVS Laxman, and General Manager Abey Kuruvilla to suggest improvements in India's domestic cricket scheduling.
Recently, Shardul Thakur, who was part of the Ranji trophy-winning Mumbai team, raised concerns over the tight schedule of the domestic cricket championship.
Shardul Thakur said that one of the main reasons for the cricketers getting injured frequently was the cramped domestic schedule.
Rahul Dravid, the current national coach of the men’s cricket team, had suggested reducing the number of tournaments being played across formats domestically.
Irani Trophy
The Irani Trophy is named after former BCCI President and Treasure Zai. R. Irani was started by the BCCI in 1960 and became an annual fixture from 1962-63. The cup lasts five days.
It is the inaugural tournament of the BCCI’s domestic season. It is played between the reigning Ranji Trophy champion and the Rest of India.
Currently, the Rest of India is the champion.
Duleep Trophy
The Duleep Trophy, named after the legendary cricketer Duleepsinhji, was started by the BCCI in 1961-62. All matches are played for four days, while the final is five days.
At present, the Duleep Trophy is played in a Zonal format. Six teams: North Zone, South Zone, Central Zone, East Zone, West Zone, and the North-East Zone participate in the Duleep Trophy.
South Zone are the 2023 Duleep trophy champions.
Ranji Trophy
The Ranji Trophy is India's premier domestic first-class cricket championship, named after K. S. Ranjitsinhji. The BCCI started the Ranji Trophy in his honour in 1934-35. It is played in round robin and knock-out format.
The duration of the round-robin matches is 4 days, while the knock-out matches (semi-final and final) are 5 days.
Mumbai are 2023-24 champions.
Deodhar Trophy
The Deodhar trophy, named after Prof. D.B. Deodhar was started by the BCCI in 1973-74. It is a limited-overs, 50-overs knockout tournament played in a Zonal format. Six teams, North Zone, South Zone, Central Zone, East Zone, West Zone, and North-East Zone, participate in the Duleep trophy.
South Zone are the winners of the 2023-24 Deodhar Trophy.
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
It is a domestic 20 overs tournament named after the former Indian cricket player Syed Mushtaq Ali. Originally, it was called the Inter-State T-20 Championship and was started by the BCCI in 2006-07.
Punjab are the current champions.
Vijay Hazare Trophy
It is a domestic 50-over limited-overs tournament in which the Ranji Trophy teams play. Initially, it was started as an under-19 tournament, but in 2007-08 it was made a senior-level one-day tournament and named the Vijay Hazare trophy in honour of the former Indian captain Vijay Hazare.
Haryana is the current champion.
Colonel C K Nayudu Trophy
It is named after the legendary Indian cricket player Colonel C K Naidu. The BCCI started it in 1973-74. The BCCI has been changing the trophy format, and currently, players under 25 years of age are allowed to participate in the tournament.
Gujarat is the 2022-23 champion.
