To commemorate the 154th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi a bench in the iconic central park of Manhattan, New York,the United States of America has been dedicated to Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).
A special ceremony was organised in Manhattan by the Consulate General of India in New York, Randhir Jaiswal, in partnership with ReNew. ReNew is one of the largest renewable energy companies of India.
On the occasion, Randhir Jaiswal highlighted India's sustainability and climate action initiatives. He emphasised the symbolism of dedicating the bench to Mission Life on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who was a strong proponent of harmony between man and nature.
Several foreign Consul Generals, members of the diplomatic community, and representatives from industry and the Indian diaspora joined the event. They voiced their commitment to Mission LiFE and creating a green planet.
Prime Minister Modi launched the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment') in the presence of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the Statue of Unity, Ekta Nagar, Kevadia, Gujarat on October 20, 2022.
Mission LiFE was first proposed by Prime Minister Modi at the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Glasgow, United Kingdom in 2022.
Mission LiFE is an India-led global mass movement that will encourage individual and collective action to protect and preserve the environment.
• Mission LiFE's objective is to mobilise at least one billion people during the 2022-2027 period. During this period, they will take action at the individual level as well as at the collective level to protect and preserve the environment.
• At least 80% of Indian villages and urban local bodies are to become environment-friendly by 2028.
• The ultimate aim of the Mission is to encourage individuals and communities to practise nature-friendly lifestyles. Those who practise such a lifestyle are recognised as 'Pro Planet People'.
