The government of India launched a nationwide “#AbKoiBahanaNahi” and “Nayi Chetna 3.0 “campaign on 25 November 2024 in New Delhi on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The campaign, which will run until 10 December 2024, which is Human Rights Day, will focus on raising awareness against gender-based violence and the need to end it.
Who inaugurated the Campaign?
- The #AbKoiBahanaNahi” campaign was inaugurated by Annpurna Devi, Union Minister of Women and Child Development.
- On this occasion, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Union Minister for Rural Development, Kamlesh Paswan, and Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, the Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, were present.
- Women leaders from Self Help Groups across the country and service providers for redressal for survivors of violence against women and girls were also present during the launch of the campaigns.
Aim of the #AbKoiBahanaNahi” Campaign
The main of the #AbKoiBahanaNahi” Campaign are as follows:
- Advance the rights of women and individuals of diverse genders.
- Free their lives from fear and gender-based discrimination.
- Empower women to break free from shame and societal constraints, enabling them to report the atrocities they have faced and fight for their dignity.
- Sensitise the general public on ending gender-based violence.
- Send a message about women’s safety as a fundamental and non-negotiable national growth and development priority.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
- Since 1994, 25 November has been observed annually as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 7 February 2000 to observe 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
- The United Nations launched the UNITE to End Violence against Women initiative in 2008 to support the civil society-led 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence campaign around the world.
- The campaign starts on 25 November and ends on Human Rights Day on 10 December.
Theme of the 2024 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
The UN Women has chosen “Every 10 Minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women” as the theme of the campaign for 2024.”
