Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairperson of Bharti Enterprises, has been included in the World Bank's Private Sector Investment Lab initiative. The inclusion of Sunil Bharti Mittal and three other private sector chief executive officers (CEO) was announced by the World Bank at its meeting of the Private Sector Investment Lab in Washington, D.C., on April 23, 2025. 

Bharti Enterprises becomes the second Indian company to be included in the Private Sector Initiative after Tata Sons.

The World Bank also announced that it will launch the second phase of the Private Sector Investment Lab initiative.

The Private Sector Investment Lab meeting is held twice a year. 

About the Private Sector Investment Lab 

The Private Sector Investment Lab was launched by the World Bank in 2023.

The Lab is a joint initiative of the World Bank and leading private sector enterprises worldwide.

Tata Sons is a founding member of the Private Sector Investment Lab.

The Private Sector Investment Lab is headed by Shriti Vadera, Chairman of the British insurance multinational giant Prudential plc. 

Function of the Private Sector Investment Lab 

  • The primary aim of the Private Sector Investment Lab is to develop approaches that can help effectively mobilise private capital to tackle the world's most pressing development challenges. 
  • To develop solutions to deal with barriers that hinder private sector investment in emerging markets and developing economies. 
  • To help the World Bank group mobilise private capital for use in emerging markets.
  • To mitigate risks for private sector investors and foster environments that support the development of bankable projects.  

Focus of the Next Phase of  Private Sector Investment Lab

According to the World Bank, based on recommendations from private sector leaders, the next phase of the Private Sector Investment Lab initiative will focus on the following five areas.

Regulatory and Policy Certainty: It will support governments in developing countries in creating stable regulatory frameworks to attract private investment..

Political Risk Insurance:  It will focus on streamlining its counter-guarantee on private investment in developing countries. 

Foreign Exchange Risk: It will focus on developing the local currency market, deepening domestic capital markets, and reducing foreign exchange risk.

Junior Equity Capital:  It has launched the Frontier Opportunities Fund to absorb early-stage risk.

Securitisation: it will collaborate with  S&P and BlackRock to standardise and securitise portfolios, unlocking capital from pension funds, insurers, and sovereign wealth funds.
