Defense Ministry Inks ₹586 Crore Contract to Procure Auxiliary Power Units for T-72, T-90 Tanks

The Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited on 22 September 2026 to procure Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) for T-72 and T-90 tanks. The deal is worth Rs 586 crore and was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi.

MoD Signed a Contract with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc

Just before this deal, the Ministry of Defence had signed another contract on 17 September with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI). Under it, India will lease two MQ-9B Sea Guardian High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems for the Indian Navy for 30 months. This contract is worth about Rs 1,943 crore. These aircraft carry advanced sensors and payloads and will help the Navy keep watch over large areas of the sea.

What Is an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)?

An APU is a backup source of electric power inside a tank. It supplies power to the fire control system, the firing circuit, the gun stabilisation system, and other equipment, without needing the tank's main engine to run. This helps save fuel and keeps key systems working even when the tank is stationary.

Key Features of MoD's Rs 586 Crore Contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited

1. The APUs will be fitted in T-72 and T-90 tanks, used by the Indian Army's Mechanised Formations.
2. These APUs are indigenously developed, meaning they are designed and made within India.
3. The deal was made under the Make-II category, which promotes industry-led research and development without government funding for prototypes.
4. It supports the goal of Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence and strengthens India's defence manufacturing base.
5. It is linked to the government's larger vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
