Guinness World Record Under Meri Mati Mera Desh Campaign

India set a Guinness World Record for the most online selfies by submitting selfies to social media as part of the Central Government's 'Meri Mati Mera Desh' campaign. As part of the 'Meri Mati Mera Desh' programme, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis participated in the Guinness Book of World Records Certificate granting event at Mumbai University.

Guinness World Records for taking Selfies

• Previously, China held the Guinness World Record for the most selfies in 2016, with about 1 lakh selfies.
• Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) in Maharashtra has already set a record with 10,42,538 selfies taken with soil.
• Of the 25 lakh selfies taken in Maharashtra, only 10,42,538 were authorised. This has left China behind to set this global record.
• This record was broken by Maharashtra, the state of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. We have more records to shatter.

Guinness World Records

• The Guinness Book of Records, which preceded the Guinness World Records, was originally released in 1955.
• Sir Hugh Beaver, managing director of Ireland's Guinness Brewery, came up with the idea for Guinness Book of Records.
• He made the decision to write a book that would include a plethora of material on both nature and human events, and he assembled a group of editors and researchers to gather and confirm the information.
• Within a few months, the book's first edition sold over 50,000 copies, making it an immediate success.
• It quickly gained international recognition after being translated into other languages and updated yearly.
• In 2000, the Guinness Book of Records rebranded itself as Guinness World Records to better represent its expanded reach and popularity.

Criteria

• Guinness World Records establishes a minimal requirement that must be fulfilled for each new record to be broken. For a record to be counted, it must meet each of the following requirements.
  • It must be quantifiable in an objective way.
  • It can't be so special that only one person can accomplish it; it has to be breakable.
  • It should also be standardised, allowing for the creation of guidelines and requirements that any challenger may adhere to.
  • It ought to be corroborated.
  • There should only be one variable used.
  • It ought to be the greatest thing ever.

Exceptions

• Guinness World Record lists a number of record types that it will not accept due to ethical concerns, including those involving the death or serious injury of animals.
• Records pertaining to environmentally unfavourable activities (such setting off party balloons and sky lanterns) are no longer checked or accepted.

• Furthermore, documents pertaining to the production or use of tobacco or cannabis are not allowed.
