UN Warns Powerful El Niño Could Trigger Global Economic Shocks

United Nations (UN) has warned that a powerful El Niño could cause major economic shocks around the world. The climate phenomenon threatens to bring extreme heat, severe droughts, and damaging floods across several continents. Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific face the highest vulnerability to these weather events.
Speaking at a news conference in Geneva, UN Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher described El Niño as a financial and humanitarian “wrecking ball.” He urged national governments and global partners to take immediate action. Fletcher called for swift disaster preparedness to limit severe economic losses and protect vulnerable communities.
El Niño is a natural climate pattern that disrupts weather conditions across the planet. It occurs when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean rise significantly above average levels.
This oceanic warming alters atmospheric circulation, changing global rainfall, temperature, and wind patterns. Certain regions suffer intense droughts, while other areas experience heavy rainfall and flash flooding. The phenomenon raises global average temperatures, compounding the existing effects of human-induced climate change.
Tom Fletcher stated that the coming weeks remain crucial for disaster planning. He urged governments, civil society groups, private corporations, and international agencies to mobilize emergency funding immediately.
Fletcher warned that El Niño impacts extend beyond direct weather zones. Food scarcity, financial hardship, and environmental damage create immense pressure on developing nations. These conditions frequently drive mass human displacement, forced migration, and regional conflicts over scarce natural resources.
Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), cautioned that El Niño could reach unprecedented strength toward the end of 2026. She noted that environmental disruptions will persist long after the primary event peaks.
Saulo highlighted severe climate risks across Southeast Asia. The region faces rising temperatures, reduced rainfall, and heightened wildfire risks. Dense haze from forest fires threatens public health, degrades air quality, and disrupts regional transport networks.
A severe El Niño destabilizes multiple interconnected economic sectors simultaneously, driving inflation and straining national budgets:
|
Economic Sector |
Specific Threat & Operational Impact |
|
Agriculture & Food Security |
Crop failures from drought and flooded farmland raise basic food prices and worsen food insecurity. |
|
Water & Energy Infrastructure |
Low reservoir levels reduce hydroelectric power output, while intense heat spikes electricity demand for cooling. |
|
Public Health & Wildfires |
Uncontrolled forest fires destroy property, degrade air quality, and increase emergency healthcare costs. |
|
Global Supply Chains |
Extreme weather damages key transport corridors, delays shipping, and reduces international commodity exports. |
Because El Niño impacts cross national borders, individual countries cannot manage these complex climate risks in isolation. Joint international efforts ensure better scientific forecasting, synchronized disaster relief, and stable international food markets.
By upgrading early-warning systems, building climate-resilient farm infrastructure, and securing water resources now, international partners can minimize economic destruction before extreme weather strikes.
