The government of India has given its green signal to set up a reserve women battalion in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).This information was provided by the Union Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Cooperation, Amit Shah on social media on 12 November 2024. This will be the first reserve women battalion in the CISF.
The CISF currently operates 12 reserve battalions which are deployed as a reinforcement for forces permanent duty like safeguarding vital national installations, VIP security etc.and temporary duties like election related deployments.
Amit Shah, during the 53rd CISF Day function held in March 2022, directed the top brass of the CISF to prepare a proposal to create a reserve battalion exclusively of women personals.
Amit Shah approved the proposal, which was subsequently prepared by the top brass of the CISF.
The reserve women battalion which will consist of 1025 personnel, will be raised from the existing women personnel of the CISF.It will be led by a senior woman commandant
Presently, around 7 percent of the CISF force comprises of women personnel
The CISF has started the recruitment and specialised training for its first women reserve battalion at its New Delhi headquarters.
The government of India is following a progressive women empowerment policy where women are being inducted into Armed forces and the Central Armed Police Force like the CISF, Border Security Force(BSF) ,Assam Rifles,Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Indo-Tibetean Border Police ITBP, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the National Security Guard (NSG).
It will also encourage women to join these forces.
The CAPF comes under the administrative control of the Union Home Ministry.
The CISF was established in 1969 by the Indian government under the Central Industrial Security Force Act, 1968.
