Lokesh Satyanathan became the first Indian athlete to cross the eight-meter mark in indoor long jump with a jump of 8.01 meters at the Tyson Invitational 2026 held in Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA.
Competing on the NCAA circuit for Tarleton State, the 26-year-old Satyanathan performed at the Randal Tyson Indoor Center and finished eighth in the field of 16 players.
USA's Cordell Tinch, the world champion in the 110 meters hurdles, won the event with a jump of 8.29 metres. Jamaica's 2019 world champion Tajay Gayle finished fourth with 8.13m, while South Africa's Rio 2016 Olympic silver medalist Luvo Manyonga finished sixth with 8.11m.
He broke the indoor national record twice in the year 2026—first with a jump of 8.01 m and later with a jump of 8.21 m.
Sathyanathan's jump of 8.01 meters bettered the previous Indian indoor national record of 7.97 meters set by Jason Aldrin in the year 2023.
This was also the second best performance of his career; His personal best performance is 8.02 metres, which he achieved in an outdoor competition in Clovis, California in the year 2023. All national records are subject to confirmation by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). Sathyanathan performed consistently well at Arkansas, with jumps of 7.69m, one foul, 7.94m, 7.99m, 8.01m and 7.96m.
The Tyson Invitational is part of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver calendar and is regularly attended by the best athletes from India and abroad.
So far this season, this Indian athlete has participated in three long jump events. In January he finished third in Texas with a jump of 7.80m, followed a week later by winning a meet in Oklahoma with a jump of 7.83m.
Both the Texas and Oklahoma competitions were F-category events – which are listed on the World Athletics calendar as national permit meets.
Lokesh Satyanathan (born 1 December 1999) is an Indian long jumper. He has an Indoor National Record in his name. Born in Bengaluru in the state of Karnataka, Satyanathan comes from a sports family; His father John played football for Bengaluru Police and his sister Monica competed in the 400 meters race.
Competing in the long jump, she won a gold medal at the 2018 South Asian U20 Athletics Championships held in Sri Lanka and subsequently represented India at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships held in Tampere, Finland. The following year, Satyanathan also won a gold medal in the long jump at the 2019 South Asian Games held in Kathmandu, Nepal.
