India is expanding its global maritime partnerships with South Korea and Cyprus to build a competitive domestic shipbuilding and shipping ecosystem. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal led high-level delegations in Busan, South Korea, holding strategic bilateral roundtables with major maritime institutions, shipbuilders, container lines, and financial funds.
The engagements targeted critical operational areas: deep-tech shipbuilding, specialized marine equipment manufacturing, maritime financing, port development, green propulsion systems, and sustainable ship recycling.
These efforts support the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which targets transforming India into a premier global hub for shipbuilding, shipping services, and port-led industrialization.
India's ministerial delegation held targeted bilateral talks across technology transfer, financial investment, and regulatory approvals.
1. Advanced Marine Engineering with Sejin Heavy Industries
Minister Sonowal met Kim Jin-jong, CEO of Sejin Heavy Industries, to establish manufacturing partnerships for specialized marine equipment. Discussions focused on fabricating large shipbuilding blocks, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cargo tanks, and cryogenic storage structures. Cochin Shipyard Limited also explored joint block fabrication initiatives.
2. R&D Integration with KOMERI
The delegation met Yang Won-chang, President of the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI). Talks established institutional cooperation between KOMERI and the proposed India Ship Technology Center (ISTC). The partnership will advance research in green ship propulsion, smart maritime software, and domestic equipment certification.
3. Fleet Registration and Financing with HMM & KOBC
Meetings with Jay Y. Lee, Senior Executive Vice President of HMM (a major South Korean container shipping line), focused on registering vessels under the Indian flag, recruiting Indian seafarers, and using HKC-compliant Indian recycling yards. Additionally, discussions with Ahn Byung-gil, CEO of Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC), focused on foreign investment in Vadhvan Port, container manufacturing under the "Made in India" initiative, and maritime debt financing.
4. EU Recycler Recognition with Cyprus
In a separate bilateral meeting, Cyprus Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis reaffirmed support for India's push to secure European Union (EU) recognition for eligible Indian ship-recycling yards. Cyprus confirmed that a delegation of 25 maritime companies will visit India in November 2026 to finalize investment partnerships.
India aims to leverage foreign direct investment, specialized technology transfer, and domestic structural reforms to modernize its maritime sector.
Integrating South Korean technology with Indian manufacturing capability expands domestic shipbuilding capacity, reduces reliance on foreign vessels, and secures critical global supply chains.
