India Approves First PinS Instrument Approach Procedure for Helicopter Operations
Updated: 02 Jul 2026
2 Min Read

On 1st July, India's aviation sector just hit a landmark moment. The country's first Private Point-in-Space (PinS) Instrument Approach Procedure for helicopter operations has been approved at Undavalli Heliport, Andhra Pradesh. Developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and cleared by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the procedure was built in line with ICAO standards. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has been closely driving this initiative forward.
The Undavalli Heliport approval is being seen as an opening door. Similar PinS procedures are now expected to roll out across the country, covering emergency medical services, disaster relief, pilgrimage routes, offshore operations, tourism, and regional connectivity. It also enables safer Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations in areas that were previously difficult to access reliably.
PinS procedures work through satellite-based navigation technology, letting helicopters carry out safe, precise approaches to heliports that lack conventional landing infrastructure. India had no such approved procedure for helicopter operations.
Civil Aviation Minister Shri Ram Mohan Naidu linked this achievement to a wider push under PM Modi's tech-driven governance, pointing out that India had also demonstrated its first GAGAN-based precision approach by a commercial aircraft just the week before. Together, both milestones reflect the government's Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) roadmap and the push to align India's helicopter ecosystem with global benchmarks. Andhra Pradesh's state government, AAI, and DGCA all played a part in getting this milestone across the line.
