On 25 July 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke the record of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as the second-longest-serving Prime Minister of India for consecutive days.
Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India from 24 January 1966 till 24 March 1977 for 4077 consecutive days.
On 25 July 2025, Narendra Modi completed his 4078 days in office during his official two-day visit to the Maldives.
India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, holds the record of being the Prime Minister of India for an uninterrupted tenure of 16 years and 286 days, from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the oath as the Prime Minister of India on 26 May 2014. He was again sworn in as the Prime Minister after the 2019 and 2024 general elections.
To be sworn in for three consecutive times as PM
He equalled the record of Pandit Nehru for being sworn in as Prime Minister three consecutive times after the Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950.
Pandit Nehru was first sworn in as India’s Prime Minister on 15 August 1947 after India gained independence. The first Lok Sabha election was held in 1951-52, and Pandit Nehru was sworn in as Prime Minister in 1952. He was again sworn in in 1957 and 1962 after the Congress Party won the general election.
To win three consecutive general elections as PM
Narendra Modi shares the record with Pandit Nehru as being the only Prime Minister to win three consecutive general elections as leader of a political party in India.
Third Longest Serving Prime Minister
He is the third-longest-serving Prime Minister of India, after Pandit Nehru (16 years and 286 days) and Indira Gandhi (15 years, 409 days).
Indira Gandhi lost the 1977 election but again won power in the 1980 general election. She was sworn in as Prime Minister in 1980 and remained in that position until her assassination on October 31, 1984. Thus, her total tenure as the Prime Minister was 15 years, 409 days.
Other records
Narendra Damodardas Modi was born on 17 September 1950, in Vadnagar, Mehsana district, Gujarat.
His family was poor, and he helped his father by selling tea at the railway station.
He later joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and subsequently entered politics by becoming a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
He holds an MA in Political Science from Gujarat University.
He became the Chief Minister of Gujarat on 7 October 2001, succeeding Keshubhai Patel.
