Glenn Maxwell Retires From International Cricket at 38

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket. His decision brings an end to a remarkable 14-year career representing Australia across all three formats. Maxwell earned global acclaim for his explosive batting, handy off-spin bowling, and ability to turn matches around single-handedly.

The 38-year-old played his final international match against Oman in February 2026 during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Maxwell picked up two wickets in that game but did not get a chance to bat. That tournament appearance marked his last outing in Australian colors.

Over his career, Maxwell played 149 ODIs, 130 T20Is, and 7 Test matches. He helped Australia win three major ICC trophies: the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup.

A Match-Winner in Limited-Overs Cricket

Maxwell served as a core pillar of Australia's white-ball squads for over a decade. He built a reputation as one of cricket's most dangerous power-hitters, constantly pressuring opposing bowlers with creative, high-risk stroke play.

Beyond his destructive batting, Maxwell regularly delivered key breakthroughs with his off-spin bowling and created crucial run-outs as a top-tier fielder. His clutch performances under pressure made him an indispensable match-winner for his country.

The Historic Double Century Against Afghanistan in 2023

The defining highlight of Maxwell's international career occurred during the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup against Afghanistan in Mumbai.

Chasing a tough target, Australia slumped to severe trouble after losing early wickets. Despite battling severe cramps and physical strain, Maxwell launched an extraordinary counter-attack, smashing an unbeaten 201 runs to pull off an astonishing victory. Fans and cricket experts widely consider this heroic knock one of the greatest individual ODI innings in cricket history.

Glenn Maxwell's International Career Statistics

Maxwell's numbers reflect his immense value as an aggressive, modern white-ball all-rounder:

Across all three formats, Maxwell scored 10 international centuries (including 5 T20I hundreds) and claimed 136 international wickets. His ODI strike rate of 126.7 and T20I strike rate of 154.4 highlight his relentless scoring speed.

Final Chapter in Australian Colors

Maxwell previously announced his retirement from ODI cricket in June 2025 while remaining available for T20Is. He completed his international journey at the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Although he has stepped away from international duties and red-ball domestic cricket, Maxwell leaves behind an extraordinary legacy defined by fearless batting, world-class fielding, and iconic World Cup victories.
