Giorgia Meloni Becomes the Longest Continuously Serving Prime Minister in Italy's Postwar History

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has achieved a rare political milestone, with her government completing 1,413 consecutive days in office, making it the longest-serving government in the history of the Italian Republic, second only to Benito Mussolini's dictatorship. Her Brothers of Italy party marked the occasion with a rally in Bari, where she addressed thousands of supporters under the slogan "The most stable government, a stronger Italy."
This achievement stands out in a country long known for political instability, where governments have historically lasted an average of just 14 months over the past eight decades. Meloni came to power in October 2022 as a self-described political "underdog," and despite early scepticism in Brussels over her roots in Italy's post-fascist nationalist right, her government has avoided major confrontations with the European Union. She has instead grown into an influential EU figure, backing Ukraine while shaping debates on migration and trade. Senior party lawmaker Carlo Fidanza noted that this stability has boosted Italy's credibility and authority on the international stage.
On the domestic front, Meloni's government has posted notable gains; unemployment has dropped to 5%, the lowest since national records began in 2004, while boat arrivals of migrants from North Africa have fallen sharply since 2023. Her government has also managed to keep Italy's budget within EU limits. That said, she now faces mounting challenges ahead of the next election, including rising living costs, friction within her coalition, disagreements over defence policy, and growing competition from rival nationalist parties.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Giorgia Meloni on reaching this milestone, describing her as a "friend" and noting that her long tenure reflects the "trust and confidence of the Italian people in her leadership." Modi further credited her friendship with playing a key role in strengthening the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership, adding that he looks forward to continuing close cooperation between the two nations to build a prosperous future for their people.
