The Democratic Party has won control of both chambers of the United States Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. The party secured a majority in the Senate and crossed the 218-seat threshold in the House of Representatives. These results mark a major shift in political power in Washington, reshaping the final two years of President Donald Trump's current term.
Voters cast ballots on November 3, 2026, deciding all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the Senate's 100 seats, and 36 state governorships. Reported election figures show a 54-seat Democratic Senate caucus (including independents aligning with the party) against 43 Republican seats, with three races uncalled. In the House, reports have called 219 seats for Democrats and 135 for Republicans as election workers finish counting remaining districts.
The Democratic victory relied on landmark flips in several traditionally Republican states, expanding the party's Senate majority across key battlegrounds:
By passing the 218-seat majority threshold, Democrats also took control of the House of Representatives. Gaining ground across competitive districts, race calls gave Democrats 219 seats against 135 for Republicans, with remaining districts concluding final counts.
Winning the House majority grants Democrats total leadership over congressional committees, allowing them to draft legislation, set floor voting schedules, and determine which bills move forward for debate.
The United States holds midterm elections every four years, right at the midpoint of a president's four-year term. While midterms do not select the president, voters choose lawmakers for both houses of Congress:
Controlling both chambers of Congress gives the Democratic Party substantial authority to check the executive branch over the next two years.
President Trump confirmed he would accept the election results, signaling a new chapter of divided government in Washington.
