India’s Nitin Menon and Javagal Srinath have been retained by the International Cricket Council in its Elite Panel of Umpires and Match Referees, respectively. The ICC released its annual list of Elite Panel of Umpires and Match referees on 28 March 2024. For the first time, a Bangladeshi, Sharfuddoula Ibn Shahid, was included in the ICC Elite Panels of Umpire.

The umpires and match referees were selected by a panel chaired by Wasim Khan,  the ICC General Manager of Cricket. The panel included former Indian player Sanjay Manjrekar, retired New Zealand umpire Tony Hill, and consultant officiating expert Mike Riley.

ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees 2024

This year, the ICC has reduced the number of match referees from seven to six. Chris Broad of England, who has been part of the panel since 2003, was dropped from the panel.

The members of the panel are David Boon (Australia), Jeff Crowe (New Zealand), Ranjan Madugalle (Sri Lanka), Andrew Pycroft (Zimbabwe), Richie Richardson (West Indies), and Javagal Srinath (India).

Former Indian fast bowler Javagal Srinath was appointed to the ICC Elite Panel in 2006. His first series as match referee was the test series between Sri Lanka and South Africa, which was held in Sri Lanka for the first time. Since then, he has been part of the ICC Panel.

ICC Elite Panel of Umpires 

Like the previous year, 12 international umpires were included in the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires.

They are Kumar Dharmasena (Sri Lanka), Christopher Gaffaney (New Zealand), Michael Gough (England), Adrian Holdstock (South Africa), Richard Illingworth (England), Richard Kettleborough (England), Nitin Menon (India), Joel Wilson (West Indies), Ahsan Raza (Pakistan), Paul Reiffel (Australia), Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid (Bangladesh), Rodney Tucker (Australia).

Nitin Menon was appointed to the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires in 2020-21. He is one of the youngest to be appointed to this Panel.  

What is an Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Referees?

The ICC introduced the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Referees in April 2002. It comprises top umpires in the world. It was introduced to ensure a high standard and impartial adjudication of international cricket matches. 

There is another set of umpires list of the ICC known as the ICC International Panel of Umpires for One-Day International matches.

Normally, two umpires from the Elite panel officiate Test matches around the world. In One-Day International (ODI) matches, one umpire is from the ICC elite panel, and the other is from the host country and a member of the ICC International Panel of Umpires for One-Day International matches.

The International Cricket Council was initially set up as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909 by England, Australia and South Africa.

It was renamed the International Cricket Council in 1987.

12 are full members who play Test Matches: England, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the Republic of Ireland.

It has 94 Associate members.
