2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, for the first time in his career, crossed the 90-meter mark with a throw of 90.23 meters at the Doha Diamond League in Doha, Qatar on 16 May 2025. Neeraj Chopra is currently training under the legendary javelin thrower Jan Zelezny of the Czech Republic. Jan Zelezny holds the world record of 98.44 meters, which he set in 1996.
However, Neeraj Chopra had to settle for a silver medal at the Doha Diamond League, as the German Julian Weber won the gold medal with a throw of 91.06 meters.
Neeraj Chopra was recently promoted to honourary Lieutenant Colonel by the Indian Army.
The Diamond League, launched in 2010, is an elite one-day athletics meet held from April to September in a calendar year.
It is the most prestigious athletics event after the Olympics and the World Athletics Championship.
The world’s top athletes participate in the Diamond League.
In a Diamond League,14 series meetings are held in different countries, where athletes from 32 different disciplines compete for points.
Based on the points earned, the top athletes qualify for the two-day Diamond League Final which is the season finale.
The 2025 Diamond League Final will be held at Weltklasse Zurich on 27-28 August 2025.
