Prime Minister Narendra Modi will go to Johannesburg, South Africa from 21 to 23 November and will participate in the 20th G20 Leaders Summit. The theme of South Africa’s G20 Presidency is Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will go to Johannesburg, South Africa from 21 to 23 November and will participate in the 20th G20 Leaders Summit. This will be the fourth consecutive G20 Summit taking place in the Global South.
- The theme of South Africa’s G20 Presidency is Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.
- The Prime Minister is expected to speak in all three sessions of the Summit. During the G20 Leaders Summit, Mr. Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with some leaders present in Johannesburg.
- He will also participate in the India-Brazil-South Africa Leaders Meeting being hosted by South Africa.
- The Summit sessions will focus on key global priorities. The first session will discuss inclusive and sustainable economic growth with focus on trade, development financing and debt challenges.
- The second meeting will look at how the G20 can contribute to building a strong world by addressing disaster risks, climate change, energy transition and food systems.
- The third meeting will focus on building a fair and just future, which will include the role of critical minerals, good work and artificial intelligence.
- During the G20 Leaders Summit, Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with some leaders present in Johannesburg. He will also participate in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders Meeting being hosted by South Africa.
G20 Summit hosts
- South Africa assumed the year-long G20 Presidency on 1 December, 2024, and will host the group’s leaders for a summit meeting in Johannesburg from 22 to 23 November, this will be the first time the G20 Summit will be held on African soil.
- G20 leaders met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 19th G20 Summit.
- India was the President of the G20 from December 2022 to November 2023 and hosted the 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023.
- The United States will host the G20 in the year 2026. The first G20 Summit was held in 2008 in Washington, D.C., USA.
Establishment of G20
- This group was established in 1999 after the Asian financial crisis as a platform for finance ministers and central bank governors to discuss global economic and financial issues.
- Later, it was elevated to the level of heads of state/government and designated as the ‘premier forum for international economic cooperation’.
- The G20 includes 19 countries – Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States along with the European Union and the African Union.
